LIGHT DUNES LUDENSTEIN

Van Bekkum Projecten

The apartment complex Ludenstein in Doorn is located in an open space in a forest that is part of the historic dune area on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Landscape architect Henk van Blerck designed the garden surrounding the complex.

The history of the surrounding landscape was an important starting point for the design. Subtle slopes of the sand dunes have been retained. The tops of the slopes are accentuated with light objects. An appealing idea, stylized sand dunes become light dunes!

DWARS ontwerp signed for the design and development of the five light objects. Each light object consists of a large plastic transparant blown top (about one by two meters) with a digital print on the inside – in the color of the dune sand and a contrasting blue tint. The light source consists of a large number of LED modules. The light objects are robust, low-maintenance, energy-efficient and weather-resistant (frost).

The images on the light object show the history of the landscape: the ice that pushed up the glacial moraine, the forests that grew and disappeared, the cattle that grazed on the meadows, the moor grass and the arrival of man.
