vzw Kunstberg | asbl Mont des Arts
The Mont des Arts is the cultural heart of the city of Brussels. The area borders the Old Town and is located on the slope that connects the upper and lower town. With its monumental institutions, the Mont des Arts has a large-scale urban appearance, but by zooming in and focusing on details, there are many personal stories to tell. In short, the Mont des Arts has many hidden facets!
16 institutions in the area – including Royal Museums of Fine Arts Brussels (RMFAB), Bozar, BELvue Museum, Coudenberg Palace, the Musical Instruments Museum (MIM), the Cinematek, the Royal Library (KBR), Belgian National Orchestra (BNO), two monumental churches, Congress Palace Square, visit.brussels, urban.brussels and the association of Belgian companies (FEB) – have united in the non-profit association Mont des Arts. The asbl Mont des Arts aims to promote the area as an exciting urban landscape with a special history and visitor attractions on different levels. Also in a literal sense! The most photographed panorama of Brussels is actually in the heart of the area. This fact was the starting point for the first joint event: Panorama Mont des Arts, a 9-day festival in the spring of 2022 in which the institutions of the asbl Mont des Arts open their doors with surprising perspectives on the city, the area and its history and future.
DWARS ontwerp has developed the initiative for Panorama Mont des Arts into a strong substantive and visual concept. The concept for the festival’s content is the result of creative brainstorming sessions in which connecting themes were distilled to form the basis for a balanced program. This resulted in seven themes forming the basis for the festival routes and associated programming. These routes – panoramic route, hidden route, historical route, futurist route, sculpture route, musical route and angels’ route – are a walk through the area along hotspots in the public outdoor space and corresponding programs within the participating institutions. In the communication (street banners, billboards, poster, flyer, festival map, website and media campaign), each route has a recognizable identity consisting of colour and an associative image. The large billboards on the Mont des Arts – on which all routes are introduced – form the physical centre of the festival and invite the public on the Mont des Arts to discover the festival.
The public outdoor space of the Mont des Arts is the foundation of Panorama Mont des Arts, for which we designed the Panorama Viewer: a blank digitally printed, cut and folded 3D object that not only functions as a festival sign but also introduces visitors to interesting facts in the public outdoor space and the program of the participating institutions. Each viewer features a digitally printed translucent slide with a unique image that discloses itself when you look through the viewer.
